Corn planter down-force systems tested
2015-04-13 23:29:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
In a low-stress year, farmer trials show modest yield gains from automatic systems. In 2014, the Boettgers, who farm 3,000 acres near Harlan in southwestern Iowa, decided to harness technology to help solve their planter down-pressure challenge. They outfitted half their 16-row Kinze 3600 planter with an Ag Leader hydraulic down-force system, which automatically senses down force and adjusts it in one second. read more

Planter Adjustments for Dry Soil
2013-03-25 20:05:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
By Mark Hanna, Iowa State University Many planters allow seed depth to be adjusted 3-4 in. Actual depth should be checked, however, to ensure penetration of seed openers and accurate seed placement. Row cleaners may be used as an aid for deeper planting, but subsequent rainfall can create soil sealing or erosion. Greater down pressure than normal may aid seed-to-soil contact. read more
