(Telecompaper) South Korean mobile operators SK Telecom and KT have won 100 MHz each in the 3.5 GHz band for provision of 5G services, The Korea Times reports citing a statement from the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT. In the same auction, LG Uplus won 80 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band. The final price for the frequencies was lower than initially expected, namely KRW 4 trillion (USD 3.6 billion).

South Korea sets 5G spectrum auction opening price at KRW 3.3 trillion

(Telecompaper) The three operators will compete for 28 blocks in the 3.5GHz spectrum and 24 blocks in the 28GHz spectrum, with the period of use starting in December for 10 years and five years, respectively, the ICT ministry said. The government set the minimum bidding price for the 3.5GHz blocks at KRW 2.65 trillion and for the 28GHz blocks at 621.6 billion after taking into consideration the last auction for 4G spectrum. In 2016, the opening price for the 4G spectrum auction was set at KRW 2.6 trillion.

Samsung Q3 sales to decline to KRW 49 trillion

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics has announced its earnings guidance for the third quarter of 2016. Samsung expects to reach consolidated sales of nearly KRW 49 trillion in the third quarter, down from a reported KRW 51.68 trillion in the year-earlier period. The company also expects an operating profit of around KRW 7.8 trillion, up slightly from KRW 7.39 trillion a year ago. In the second quarter of 2016, Samsung saw its sales reach nearly KRW 51 trillion, while operating profit amounted to KRW 8.14 trillion. The company will report full quarterly results at a later date.

SoftBank to invest KRW 5 tln in South Korea tech sector

(Telecompaper) SoftBank plans to invest around KRW 5 trillion (approximately USD 4.5 billion) in South Korea's technology sector over the next 10 years, The WSJ reports, citing SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. According to a SoftBank spokesperson, during a meeting with South Korean President Park Geun-hye in Seoul, Masayoshi Son said the plans to invest in smart robots, the IoT and artificial intelligence. These areas are the focus for his company over the next 30 years, Son added.
Samsung Pay transaction volume tops KRW 2 tln in Korea

(Telecompaper) Samsung Pay has exceeded KRW 2 trillion (approximately USD 1.78 billion) in transaction volume in South Korea in the first year since the company launched the mobile payment service on 20 August 2015, Yonhap news agency reports, citing a company statement. Samsung said more than 11 million cards registered to access the service in Korea. Samsung also reports the service reached a total of 100 million transactions across the seven countries where it is available, namely the US, China, Australia, Spain, Singapore, Brazil and South Korea.
