2015-07-10 09:18:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Independent MVNOs are approaching 20 percent of the Dutch mobile market, according to the latest report from Telecompaper. They counted 4.0 million customers at the end of March, and increased their market share to 19.7 percent of total Dutch Sims, from 19.2 percent six months earlier. Other 'virtual' brands, such as the second brands or co-brands run by the mobile operators, had around 4.6 million customers. Together the two had 41.8 percent of DUtch mobile customers at the end of March. Virtual operators also active in the fixed market, such as Ziggo Mobiel and Tele2, and in the 'no-frills', low-cost segment, such as Hollandsnieuwe, Simpel and Youfone, were the main ones growing in the period researched. The no-frills segment remains the largest in the Dutch VO market, accounting for slightly more than a third of customers, while the fixed segment has a 12 percent market share. While virtual operators slightly expanded their market share, more virtual players exited the market than entered it in the six months since Telecompaper's last report on Dutch MVNOs. After counting three new brands and five exits in the period, the total number of active mobile virtual operators in the Netherlands fell to 65 at the end of March 2015.

(Telecompaper) The Dutch FTTH market increased by 370,000 connections in 2014, with Reggefiber accounting for 77 percent. At the end of December, the number of FTTH homes passed reached 2,329,000, accounting for over 30 percent of all Dutch households, according to the 2015 edition of Telecompaper's annual FTTH report. A number of milestones were reached in the course of last year, namely that the number of homes passed reached the 2 million and that the number of homes activated amounted to 750,000. In the second half of the year, FTTH household penetration increased. In particular, KPN and Vodafone Netherlands on the Reggefiber networks and Caiway on the CIF networks saw their subscriber numbers grow faster than in previous years. At the end of the year, more than 1 in 10 households in the Netherlands subscribed via fibre. Most provinces have initiated rural broadband plans to bridge the digital divide. Many have put aside dozens of millions of euros for subsidies or loans, with inhabitants required to make a financial contribution in most cases. For example, Gelderland has the most connections with 460,000, Noord-Brabant grew fastest in term of numbers (+70,000), and Overijssel grew fastest in terms of percentages (+ 13%).

(Telecompaper) The Dutch mobile services market fell in the first quarter to EUR 1.17 billion in revenues, down 4 percent from the year before, according to Telecompaper's latest Dutch Mobile Operators report. Compared to the fourth quarter, revenues fell 5.5 percent. Only Vodafone Netherlands was able to achieve growth in sales and market share. But although the market for mobile services is still shrinking, the decline is slowing. In Q1 2014, the decrease amounted to 10.7 percent from the year before. The impact of regulation on Q1 of this year was less and data services generated more revenue growth. Revenues from voice services fell in Q1 of this year by 9.7 percent from the year earlier. Although revenue from data services grew, they were not able to completely offset the double-digit fall of revenues from SMS services, with total non-voice revenue rising only 3 percent. The market share of non-voice among total mobile services lifted to 48 percent.
