United States: Drought threatens California despite El Nino
2016-04-13 03:38:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
AFP: Last winter, El Nino-driven storms dumped much-needed snow and rain over California, boosting reservoir levels and fuelling hopes the parched state's four-year drought might end. But despite the brief respite, experts say the record drought is here to stay. The El Nino weather phenomenon -- caused when a rise in the Pacific Ocean's temperature triggers intense precipitation -- has provided only "a band-aid on a gaping wound,' says Julien Emile-Geay, a paleoclimatologist at the University of...

Global warming, El Nino leave 36 per cent of coral reefs on death watch
2016-04-07 09:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
CBC: The coral on the sea floor around the Pacific island of Kiritimati looked like a boneyard in November stark, white and lifeless. But there was still some hope. This month, color returned with fuzzy reds and browns but that's not good news. Algae has overtaken the lifeless coral on what had been some of the most pristine coral reefs on the planet, said University of Victoria coral reef scientist Julia Baum after dozens of dives in the past week. Maybe 5 percent will survive, she estimated....
El Nino has eased to moderate levels: Australia weather bureau
2016-03-01 05:37:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: An ongoing El Nino weather pattern is now at moderate levels, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said on Tuesday, as associated climate indicators have eased. Pacific Ocean sea temperatures have eased in the last two weeks, the BOM said, pushing the severity of the El Nino down from strong to moderate levels. The El Nino is expected to end by the second quarter of 2016, the BOM said. The Australian weather bureau said a La Nina weather event remains a possibility, though neutral...

NASA sees a different kind of El Nino
2016-02-26 03:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: A new NASA visualization shows the 2015 El Nio unfolding in the Pacific Ocean, as sea surface temperatures create different patterns than seen in the 1997-1998 El Nio. Computer models are just one tool that NASA scientists are using to study this large El Nino event, and compare it to other events in the past. "The start of an El Nio is important," said Robin Kovach, a research scientist with the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt,...
El Nino begins decline after powerful impact: WMO
2016-02-18 08:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: The 2015-2016 El Nino weather phenomenon, one of the most powerful on record, has begun its decline but continues to have a strong influence on global climate patterns, the UN's weather agency said Thursday. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said El Nino, which occurs every two to seven years, has "passed its peak' but ocean temperature rises in recent months proved its considerable impact. "We have just witnessed one of the most powerful ever El Nino events which caused extreme weather...
