Alberta floods a wake-up call to dangers of extreme weather: Experts
2013-06-29 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Ottawa Citizen: The Alberta floods are Canadas Hurricane Sandy moment, and should be a catalyst for badly needed changes to limit future damage from extreme weather, say experts on climate change adaptation. In many cases, the standards for where and how we build are completely out of date with a climatically changed future, said Ian Mauro, Canada Research Chair in human dimension and environmental change at Mount Allison University. The Alberta floods, he said, should be a wake-up call that we need to seriously...

Canada: Jet stream eyed as one culprit in Alberta floods
2013-06-26 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Canadian Press: It`s a long way from the Arctic Ocean to southern Alberta, but scientists are increasingly intrigued by theories that link disappearing sea ice to off-the-hook weather such as last week`s flooding. Many are coming to believe there`s a common thread between not enough ice on the ocean and too much water in the rivers -- a high-altitude, high-speed torrent of air called the jet stream. "There`s been a lot interest in the jet stream in the last two or three years," said Dave Phillips, an Environment...
