The railroad company said on Nov. 17 that it received a buyout bid, in which Norfolk shareholders would received $46.72 in cash and 0.348 shares in a new company that would own the new combined company, for each Norfolk share they own. At the time, that worked out to about a 10% premium.

Dec 2 A U.S. appeals court refused on Wednesday to reconsider its decision invalidating a Sequenom Inc prenatal DNA test patent, a decision that could put in doubt the validity of a wide range of medical and biotechnology patents. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington said in June the patent was not eligible for legal protection because it fell under the U.S. Supreme Court's rule against patenting natural phenomena.
Supreme Court Rejects Covidien Bid To Restore Patent Verdict Against Ethicon

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal by Covidien LP seeking to restore a $176 million patent infringement verdict against Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon Inc. In refusing to hear the case, the high court left in place a December 2014 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit that threw out a judge's finding that Ethicon had infringed upon Covidien's patents for surgical cutting tools. Covidien is owned by Medtronic Plc.
