Reuters: Tests have confirmed that a green film shimmering on the surface of the Willamette River as it flows through Oregon's largest city is caused by toxic algae that can be dangerous to people and animals, public health officials said on Friday. State officials say it's best to avoid contact with the water in the Willamette between the Fremont and Ross Island Bridges, until scientists complete their investigation into a blue-green algae spotted in the river since Tuesday. The Department of Environmental Quality hopes to complete its analysis of algae samples by Thursday night or Friday morning to see if they are toxic, said DEQ spokesman Brian White.

Blue-green algae was spotted floating on the Willamette River Tuesday in Portland, promoting the Oregon Health Advisory to issue a health advisory.
