Apple, Broadcom ordered to pay CalTech USD 1.1 bln in Wi-Fi patent case

(Telecompaper) The California Institute of Technology has prevailed in a patent infringement case launched against Apple and Broadcom, who have been ordered to pay a total USD 1.1 billion in damages, Reuters reports. In a case filed in federal court in Los Angeles back in 2016, the Pasadena-based research university claimed that Broadcom Wi-Fi chips used in millions of Apple iPhones infringed patents relating to data transmission technology. The federal jury awarded CalTech USD 837.8 million from Apple and USD 270.2 million from Broadcom.

Apple beats quarterly outlook with growth in iPhones, wearables, services

(Telecompaper) Apple performed better than expected in its fiscal first quarter to December. Revenues rose 9 percent year-on-year to a record USD 91.8 billion, ahead of its guidance thanks to strong growth over the holidays and growth in services, wearables and iPhones. Net earnings increased 19 percent to USD 4.99.

Apple, DoJ Grapple Over Cracking Terrorist's iPhones

This time it's over cracking a brace of iPhones owned by the Saudi Air Force cadet who killed three sailors in a shooting spree last month at the naval air station in Pensacola, Florida. At a news conference on the findings of an investigation into the incident, U.S. Attorney General William Barr called out Apple for refusing to help the FBI.

Trump rebukes Apple for not unlocking shooting suspect iPhones

(Telecompaper) Apple responded by saying it provided gigabytes of information to law enforcement related to the Pensacola case but that it would not build a "backdoor" or specialised software to give law enforcement further access."We reject the characterization that Apple has not provided substantive assistance in the Pensacola investigation. Our responses to their many requests since the attack have been timely, thorough and are ongoing," Apple said.
