DRAM shortage from Hynix fire to hit PCs hardest

The fire damage suffered by SK Hynix's Wuxi, China DRAM fabrication (FAB) plant last week, along with the resulting power outage and clean room contamination, is expected to lead to a number of problems in the short term for DRAM supply, a new report finds. Most acutely, the fire that blazed for almost two hours appears to have damaged equipment used for making PC DRAM, which has sent memory prices skyrocketing more than 27 percent over the past week.

Startup Crossbar pits RRAM against DRAM and flash storage

Startup Crossbar emerged from stealth mode Monday to announce its version of RRAM (resistive random-access memory), a new type of memory that could be a successor to flash storage and DRAM. The company, founded in 2010, will make and license its RRAM, a nonvolatile memory, which will be smaller, faster and more power-efficient than NAND flash and RAM, said George Minassian, CEO of Crossbar.

Nanya, Inotera climb on DRAM shortage projection

Shares of Nanya Technology Corp. and Inotera Memories Inc., two of Taiwan's leading dynamic random access memory chip-makers, rose sharply Wednesday morning on a projection that the existing DRAM shortage will continue into 2015, dealers said.
