Netflix begins the move to HTML5, but DRM stands in the way
2013-04-16 21:15:15| Extremetech
Netflix uses Microsoft's Silverlight plug-in to deliver its streaming video. It works fairly well on OS X and Windows, but it's not a viable option on Linux, mobile devices, or set-top boxes. At this point, the writing is on the wall in regard to the future of Flash and Silverlight. A different playback method is necessary going forward, and HTML5 video is the obvious choice here. Sadly, there are numerous obstacles in the way -- DRM being the biggest.

While the original plan was to announce the Xbox 360's successor later this month, it now looks like it will be unveiled on May 21.
Always-on DRM and mandatory game installs point to death of Xbox 720 used games
2013-03-20 18:34:21| Extremetech
In recent memory, rumors have surfaced that suggest the next Xbox, whether it be called the Xbox 720, Durango, or something else entirely, will be a console that is always connected to the internet. This unfortunate notion is commonly referred to as always-on DRM, usually requiring consumers to be online in order to access their software. A new leak is corroborating the always-on rumor, as well as suggesting that the Xbox 720 will require all games to be installed to the hard drive.

DRM deceit: SimCity doesnt need to be always online, says Maxis developer
2013-03-13 12:35:20| Extremetech
In an unsurprising but wholly satisfying twist, it turns out that EA and Maxis were lying about SimCity's always-online server requirements. According to a developer who worked on SimCity and has very detailed knowledge of the game's architecture, it would be quite easy to create a single-player version of the game that doesn't require EA's draconian always-on DRM.
