A section of Mumias sugar growers have resumed cane farming with new cane varieties. The new cane seeds introduced by the Mumias Sugar Company mature early and are diseaseresistant. Akatu Opiyo, a farmer from Shirotsa village in Butere district said he earlier quit cane farming following poor yields and low returns.

Awendo Cane millers in the South Nyanza sugar belt have called on the government to help cut the cost of production. Lawrence Opiyo from Sukari Industries said the cost of sugar production should be harmonised with other countries in the Comesa region.
