Private equity firms eye bids for Optus - report

(Telecompaper) Private equity companies Carlyle Group and KKR are among those lining up bids for SingTel's Australian subsidiary Optus Satellite, reports Reuters citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. Optus Satellite is valued at more than AUD 2 billion (USD 1.9 billion). SingTel is facing weak growth in its key markets of Singapore and Australia, and could use funds from a sale to invest in faster-growing businesses. The sources said that Blackstone Group, Eutelsat Communications and Providence Equity Partners are also expected to make bids, with SingTel understood to be inviting first round offers by 14 June. Optus sells TV, telephony and broadband services to more than 2 million subscribers in Australia and New Zealand.

Optus begins TD-LTE trial in Canberra

(Telecompaper) Australian operator Optus has unveiled its network plans for the coming year. Optus will add TD-LTE technology to its FD-LTE network, starting in Canberra. Optus' LTE network currently covers Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay,Toowoomba, and the Newcastle/Hunter regions. The company has begun a customer trial of the technology on the 2300 MHz band in Canberra with a dual-band dongle and a Wi-Fi modem. Optus plans to expand coverage of both types of 4G in the coming year to over 70 percent of the metro population by mid-2014. The company will this year also prepare its network for the new 700 MHz and 2500 MHz spectrum that it acquired in the recent spectrum auction.

Optus, Telstra, TPG buy spectrum at auction

(Telecompaper) All three biddersOptus Mobile, Telstra and TPG Internethave secured spectrum in the Australian spectrum auction. Four companies initially applied to participate in the auction. However, Vodafone Hutchison Australia withdrew before the auction, which started on 23 April. Optus secured 2x10 MHz of 700 MHz spectrum and 2x20 MHz in the 2.5 GHz band for AUD 649.13 million. Telstra paid AUD 1.30 billion for 2x20 MHz in the 700 MHz band and 2x40 MHz in the 2.5 GHz band, while TPG Internet bought 2x10 MHz in the 2.5 GHz band for AUD 13.50 million.
