Burst Water Main Causes Flooding, Forces Home Evacuations

A burst water main in Millburn near the New Jersey Transit train station flooded local streets, forced home evacuations and spurred a boil water advisory for three towns: Millburn, Maplewood and Irvington. According to reports, a 24-inch water main burst on Friday night, causing severe flooding before workers from New Jersey American Water managed to shut the main off on Saturday morning.

City officials declaring water safe, despite having to send second failure notice

Residents were raging the first time they received a notice in the mail from the Department of Environmental Quality saying the drinking water in Flint was unsafe. The failure was triggered by increased levels of a byproduct called TTHM.

ASTM Standard helps labs test for dissolved gases in water.

Proposed ASTM standard, WK43267, Test Method for Measurement of Dissolved Gases Methane, Ethane, Ethylene, and Propane by Static Headspace Sampling and Flame Ionization Detection will help environmental and testing laboratories ensure that drinking water is safe in areas in which hydraulic fracturing occurs. Laboratories would use proposed test to compare water from fracturing areas to water prepared with dissolved gases as a serial dilution.
