EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy joined others in recognizing market-based nutrient trading program, run by Virginia, aimed at improving water quality of Chesapeake Bay. Encouraging economic investment while reducing phosphorus pollution to local waterways, program saved Commonwealth >$1 million and demonstrated innovative means of meeting Clean Water Act stormwater requirements and Virginia water quality goals. Similar programs are expected to be established around USA.

Lubbock-Based Water District Closer to Adding Briscoe Co. Over Landowner Objections

Despite protests from landowners, state regulators have brought the western portion of Briscoe County one step closer to falling under the jurisdiction of the Lubbock-based High Plains Underground Water Conservation District. On December 10, commissioners with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted in favor of an administrative judge's ruling in favor of adding Briscoe County to the HPWD.

Chimney Hollow Reservoir gets OK; will add water storage for Longmont

The federal government on Friday signed off on a Larimer County reservoir designed to make the water supply more reliable for two water districts, the Platte River Power Authority and 10 Front Range municipalities, including Longmont.

Biosolids recycling program to reduce chemical fertilizer, improve water quality in city of Toledo

Synagro Technologies, the nation's largest recycler of organic residuals, recently announced details of a five-year biosolids recycling program in the city of Toledo, Ohio, that will improve water quality in the Lake Erie watershed by reducing the use of commercial chemical fertilizer. Toledo's biosolids will be used as a natural fertilizer on farmland, eliminating the need for more than 400 tons of chemical fertilizer, which has greater potential of runoff to rivers, lakes and streams.
