FreedomPop launches free mobile service in UK

(Telecompaper) US MVNO FreedomPop confirmed that its free mobile service is now live in the UK, offering 200 minutes, 200 texts and 200 MB data free for life. The first 10,000 users to sign up are being offered a special plan with 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts and 1 GB of data free for the first month of service. FreedomPop users will also be able to unlimited free data by completing various third-party offers such as taking a survey or downloading a coupon. They can also share and receive free data with any friends and family that are also FreedomPop users. UK users can also roll over any unused data each month, receive usage alerts and get an additional virtual international phone number. The UK is the first market outside the US where FreedomPop has launched its free mobile services. It aims to launch its free service in seven other countries within the next 12 months and over 20 markets by 2017.

Xiaomi launches own mobile service in China

(Telecompaper) Chinese handset maker Xiaomi has launched its own mobile service in China. MiMobile offers a Sim that works over China Telecom's 2G/3G/4G network. The prepaid service charges CNY 0.10 per minute, text or MB, and customers can also subscribe to a bundle of 3GB data for CNY 59 per month. Users also receive free roaming across China and free incoming calls. Xiaomi announced the new service at the presentation of its latest smartphone for the Chinese market, the Mi 4c. The 4G dual-Sim device runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 six-core processor at 1.8GHz and comes with a 3,080 mAh battery, QuickCharge 2.0, 5-inch full HD display, a USB Type-C adaptor, a 5-megapixel wide-angle front camera and 13 megapixel rear camera with phase detection autofocus. It will be available in a range of colours for CNY 1,299 for 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage or CNY 1,499 with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. The mi 4c also supports infrared technology to replace common remote controls, such as for a TV or air conditioner, and Xiaomi's EdgeTap tecnology to perform common functions with a simple tap of the phone.

Verizon's Mobile Video Service Go90 Launches Into Beta

The New York Times confirms . Verizon tells us the service is actually debuting into beta with Verizon Wireless customers and subscribers from other carriers starting today, with a broader rollout planned for the end of the month.

Verizon Communications Inc will launch a trial version of its new mobile video service on Tuesday, aiming to prove that telecom players can compete with mobile ad industry titans Google Inc and Facebook Inc. Verizon said its service, a mobile app dubbed "go90", will be offered initially to a select set of its own customers, with advertisements from well-known brands, which it declined to name, but without newly acquired ad technology from AOL, the media company it bought in June for $4.4 billion. Verizon is targeting young viewers or millennials with about 100 to 200 hours of exclusive content from online video networks such as AwesomenessTV and Machinima, said Brian Angiolet, Verizon's senior vice president, consumer products.
