RIP Ubuntu Edge, but Ubuntu is still coming to smartphones in 2014
2013-08-22 17:00:59| Extremetech
The Ubuntu Edge, a smartphone that doubles up as as a desktop PC when docked, has unsurprisingly failed to meet its funding goal of $32 million. Canonical is fairly stoic about its failure, issuing a statement that $12.8 million is still the "biggest ever fixed crowdfunding campaign." Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth, speaking to the Guardian newspaper, says that carriers and OEMs are still "definitely interested" in making mid-range Ubuntu-powered smartphones. For now, though, the dream of an ultra-high-spec superphone like the Edge, which doubles up as a desktop PC, is dead.
Ubuntu Edge smartphone misses crowdfunding goal by $19 million

Canonical raised only $12.8 million of the $32 million it wanted for the production of the Ubuntu-based Edge smartphone. Close to 20,000 people backed the project, which ran from July 22 to Aug. 21, but that wasn't enough to reach the ambitious goal. The final sum raised has still made the Edge fund-raiser the biggest fixed-target crowdfunding campaign, so far, according to Canonical.

Canonical falls short in fundraising drive for Ubuntu phone
2013-08-22 10:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Canonical has fallen short in its target to raise USD 32 million through crowdsourcing to produce the Ubuntu Edge smartphone. The group launched in July a 30-day fundraising drive on the site Indiegogo, but at the end of the campaign only raised USD 12.8 million. The donations from almost 20,000 people and businesses, including USD 80,000 from Bloomberg LP, will be refunded. While production of the Ubuntu Edge will not go ahead, Canonical said it was still in talks with major manufacturers on developing the Ubuntu mobile operating OS, and it expects devices running the software to reach the market in 2014. In June it also formed a Carrier Advisory Group to seek input from operators on developing the platform.
Ubuntu Edge smartphone probably not going to get funded

The Ubuntu Edge, an innovative smartphone concept that is designed to double as a dockable PC, appears unlikely to meet its $32 million funding goal by the IndieGoGo campaign deadline of 11:59 p.m. PST.
