LG Electronics is getting into smartphone processor development with an octa-core chip that features in its G3 Screen smartphone, which went on sale Friday in South Korea. The Nuclun mobile application processor uses ARM's big.Little design for multitasking, with four 1.5GHz cores for high performance and four 1.2GHz cores for less intensive jobs, the South Korean company said.

The Thread Group has invited more companies to join its effort at harmonizing the "Internet of things" in consumers' homes, but it still faces a tangled industry with competing and overlapping technologies. The organization launched in July with a core group of major technology companies including Samsung, ARM Holdings, Freescale Semiconductor, and Google's recently acquired home devices business, Nest Labs.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is taking the fight to IBM, Microsoft, and SAP in the burgeoning in-memory database market with a new option the company says can deliver dramatic performance boosts without requiring changes to applications. Ellison first unveiled Oracle Database In-Memory at September's OpenWorld conference. During a webcast Tuesday, Ellison is expected to announce the product will be generally available within 60 days.
