Spain regulator concerned about telecoms competition
2015-04-23 15:17:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The president of Spain's communications regulator CNMC has raised fears about the competitive implications of Orange's imminent takeover of Jazztel, which will reduce the number of major operators in Spain to just three: Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange. "Three operators is a troubling number for any competition regulating authority," said Jose Maria Marin at a Senate hearing, according to Europa Press. The result could be an increase in prices and a decline in service quality, said Marin, who went on to add that the existence of numerous operators in Spain had resulted in the offer of "relatively cheap telecommunications packages". The CNMC's president also suggested that competition would only be restored if a fourth major telecoms player were created.

Spain to bring 100 Mbps broadband to all schools
2015-03-30 12:15:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Spain's industry ministry has announced that it will be allocating EUR 330 million to bring broadband at speeds of up to 100 Mbps to all Spanish schools. The corresponding framework agreement was signed by the country's industry minister Jose Manuel Soria, education minister Jose Ignacio Wert and economy minister Luis de Guindos in the presence of president Mariano Rajoy. Presenting the plan, Rajoy said over 6.5 million students in over 16,500 state-funded schools would benefit from a project that formed part of Spain's Digital Agenda objectives. Spain's ICT development agency Red.es will be entrusted with managing the initiative, which will be part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and focuses above all on schools located in areas with difficult access to the broadband network.
