Vodafone Spain launches Atika smart speaker with Alexa

(Telecompaper) Vodafone Spain has teamed up with French audio technology brand Devialet and equipment manufacturer Sagemcom to develop its first smart speaker with integrated Amazon Alexa. The voice-controlled device, dubbed Vodafone Atika, is above all designed to enable customers to interact with the Vodafone TV service without having to use the remote. Sample commands include "Hola Atika, turn on the TV", "change channels", "record", "fast forward 10 minutes" and so on. Users can also ask the device to access Netflix, HBO Spain, Amazon Prime Video plus all the channels on the Vodafone TV catalogue.

Spain to impose tax on OTT platforms to fund local audiovisual production

(Telecompaper) The Spanish government is set to bring in legislation that would impose a 5 percent tax on OTT platforms including Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ with a view to funding local and European audiovisual production, according to a draft law introduced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. Under the draft General Law on Audiovisual Communication, the streaming giants will be taxed on the basis of earnings generated in Spain "in line with the reality of the market where new audiovisual players have multiplied as a result of new technologies," said the ministry.

ViacomCBS to launch Pluto TV in Spain this month

(Telecompaper) ViacomCBS Networks announced that it will be launching its free streaming platform Pluto TV in Spain at the end of this month. The ad-supported service will offer 40 thematic channels at launch across multiple genres, including movies, TV series, reality, kids, lifestyle, crime and comedy. It will be the first free, with no registration required, FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) service on the Spanish market, said ViacomCBS, adding that Telefonica's Movistar+ brand will be responsible for selling the platform's conventional advertising.
