Apple quarterly sales fall 13%, further drop expected in Q2

(Telecompaper) Apple has reported a drop in revenues for its fiscal second quarter to March, as economic weakness in some countries and the slower smartphone market dampens sales of its devices. Quarterly revenues fell 13 percent year-on-year to USD 50.6 billion, at the low end of the company's guidance of USD 50-53 billion. Net income dropped to USD 10.5 billion or USD 1.90 per share from USD 13.6 billion or USD 2.33 per share. Apple shipped 51.19 million iPhones in the three months to March, down 16 percent from a year earlier and 32 percent less than in the December quarter. To appease shareholders, the company announced a 10 percent increase in the quarterly dividend and increased its share buyback authorisation to USD 175 billion from USD 140 billion.

(Telecompaper) Alphabet, the parent company of Google, reported first-quarter sales up 17 percent year-on-year to USD 20.257 billion. Excluding currency effects, revenues rose 23 percent. The company's operating margin was stable at 26 percent, and net profit rose to USD 4.207 billion or USD 6.02 per share from USD 3.515 billion or USD 5.10 a year ago. Google alone, excluding the company's 'other bets', also posted revenues up 17 percent, at USD 20.091 billion, and its operating profit rose to USD 6.272 billion from USD 5.188 billion. The 'other bets' contributed an operating loss of USD 802 million on revenue of USD 166 million. Alphabet collected USD 7.658 billion in operating cash flow in the quarter and spent USD 2.428 billion on capital equipment, leaving it with total cash of USD 75.264 billion at the end of March.

China, emerging APAC drive record quarterly smartphone sales

(Telecompaper) China's return to growth and high demand in emerging Asia-Pacific countries (APAC) drove third-quarter global smartphone sales to a quarterly record of 323.7 million, up 7.4 percent year on year, according to GfK. A 24 percent year-on-year increase in unit sales in emerging APAC was driven primarily by a 40 percent year-on-year growth in India, thanks above all to strong demand within the sub-USD 100 price band segment (up 66 percent year-on-year), which now accounts for almost half (48 percent) of the market, said GfK. Sales were also up 16 percent year-on-year in the Middle East and Africa (MEA), with Egypt posting stand-out figures of 39 percent year-on-year. In contrast to India, it was sales of high-end and mid-range smartphones that returned unit sales in China to growth for the first time in over a year. A total of 98 millions units were sold in the third quarter, a year-on-year increase of 6 percent, with sales units of high-end (USD 500+) and mid-range (USD 250-500) devices up 65 percent and 25 percent year-on-year, respectively.
