Telecom Italia revenues down 1.6% in Q1 on Brazil decline, regulatory fines

2018-05-17 08:36:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia reported a 1.6 percent year-on-year decline in revenues to EUR 4.74 billion in the first quarter, hit by falling sales at its TIM Brasil unit and provisions made for a domestic fine of EUR 74.3 million imposed on the phone group after the Italian government activated the so-called "golden power" rule last October to scale back Vivendi's influence. The company's EBITDA for the quarter fell 4.9 percent year on year to EUR 1.89 billion with a margin of 39.9 percent, down 1.4 percentage points year on year. On an organic basis, excluding exchange rate effects and non-recurring components, revenues were up 2.7 percent in the first three months of the year, with EBITDA rising 1.8 percent, boosted by a 1.7 percent rise in domestic sales. The group's adjusted net debt came to EUR 25.54 billion at the end of Q1, some EUR 229 million higher than the Q4 result, with capex falling to EUR 660 million from EUR 831 million in Q1 2017.

EC fines Altice EUR 125 mln for breaching EU rules over merger notification

2018-04-24 14:20:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) For its part, Altice said it fully disagrees with the Commission's decision. It believes the transaction agreement governing the management of the target during the pre-closing period provided Altice with a consultation right on certain exceptional matters relating to PT Portugal, and was in accordance with well-established M&A market practice. Altice said it will file an appeal against the Commission's decision before the EU General Court to request that the decision as a whole be annulled or, at the very least, that the sanction be significantly reduced.

EC proposes bigger fines, more compensation for consumer rights violations

2018-04-11 15:18:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The European Commission has unveiled its promised 'New Deal for Consumers', proposing new measures to increase transparency in online sales, extend consumer protection to 'free' services, allow consumer groups to launch collective lawsuits, and set minimum standards for both individual compensation and trader penalties for violating consumer rights. The proposal follows a review of EU consumer rights regulation last year and was prompted by recent EU-wide breaches such as 'Dieselgate'. It builds on the EC's work to date on extending consumer protections online, under the Digital Single Market project.
