King Alexander to DEQ: Give more time to study barge-cleaning business that could have 'astronomical' impact LSU's president and Mayor-president Kip Holden have called on the state Department of Environmental Quality to grant more time for public comment on a proposed barge cleaning facility along River Road. No decision was made Thursday, but DEQ spokesman Greg Langley said the requested delay is under review and something could be decided Friday.

It looks like the former Futorian furniture plant, nearly abandoned in recent years, may rise again, Phoenix-like, to again become a part of the area's industrial community. The plant was originally the Futorian-Stratford Furniture Company, later becoming Mohasco, eventually Caye Furniture and, briefly, Newport Home Furnishings over its history.
