Eco-efficient Crop & Livestock Production for Nicaraguan Farmers
2015-03-05 22:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Inter Press Service: For Roberto Pineda, a smallholder farmer in the Somotillo municipality of Nicaragua, his traditional practice after each harvest was to cut down and burn all crop residues on his land, a practice known as "slash-and-burn" agriculture. A widespread practice on these sub-humid hillsides of Central America, it was nonetheless causing many negative environmental implications, including poor soil quality, erosion, nutrient leaching, and the loss of ecosystem diversity. Slash-and-burn allows farmers...

Agriculture in 2015: Farm program sign-up, renewable fuels, crop production and land values
2014-12-30 21:17:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
2015 is setting up to be another interesting year in the agriculture industry, following a fairly profitable year in 2014 for many livestock producers, but a far less profitable year for most crop producers in the upper Midwest. 2015 will bring farm program sign up, as well as continued uncertainty about renewable fuels. There are also crop production costs to consider, and the hope that land values continue to moderate. Focus on Ag read more

Crop Production Amplifies Carbon Dioxide Cycle
2014-11-21 06:22:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Business Times: A research team from Boston University collaborated with other universities and institutions to find out how agricultural production, especially corn, generates up to a quarter of the increase in the carbon cycle. Production statistics of crops mainly produced and consumed worldwide were used in the research. The group found out that yield from corn, wheat, rice and soybean has more than doubled since 1961. Consequently, a billion metric tonnes of carbon is absorbed and released annually. Corn...

USDA weekly weather update, July 22: Cool, dry air, soil moisture favor crop production in Plains, Midwest
2014-07-22 22:12:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Source: USDA Cool, dry air overspread the northern Plains and Upper Midwest. A lack of heat stress and abundant soil moisture continued to favor Midwestern corn and soybeans, although below-normal temperatures remained a concern with respect to crop development across the northern Corn Belt. read more
