Fish failing to adapt to rising carbon dioxide levels in ocean

2014-10-05 18:40:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: Rising carbon dioxide levels in oceans adversely change the behaviour of fish through generations, raising the possibility that marine species may never fully adapt to their changed environment, research has found. The study, published in Nature Climate Change, found that elevated CO2 levels affected fish regardless of whether their parents had also experienced the same environment. Spiny damselfish were kept in water with different CO2 levels for several months. One level was consistent with...

Kroes tells operators to adapt fast in final speech

2014-10-02 08:34:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) In her final speech as EU digital economy commissioner, outgoing VP Neelie Kroes warned European telecommunications operators of the need to adapt fast to the changing market to avoid being left behind. "The future market won't be characterised by rent-seeking, and protectionism. It won't feature players stuck in gilded national cages. It won't achieve profit by relying on dated revenue streams," she told operators gathered at the Brussels summit of industry lobby group ETNO. After joking that "you're probably all looking forward to the very near future when you won't have to put up with me anymore," Kroes went on to explain how she would run the telecoms industry if she was in charge of it. "Make specific complaints: 'Regulate my rival' is not a general message that will resonate," she said, adding that what the industry needs is " large, strong pan-European players alongside smaller niche players." Although Kroes has battled telecoms executives throughout her near five-year tenure over issues such as regulation, roaming fees and, more recently, net neutrality, she welcomed ETNO's new "Think Digital" manifesto, saying it would allow them to play a more positive role in shaping Europe's digital future in the next five years and help them prepare for developments such as the Internet of Things (IoT). "Soon we will see everything connected," she said. "Will the telecoms sector lead us there or will you be dragged along behind?"

Climate Change Forces Tropical Lizards Swiftly Adapt

2014-09-17 00:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World: Climate change is affecting all sorts of animals, from sharks to polar bears to birds, but new research has focused on tropical lizards, which have learned to swiftly adapt in order to survive. Previous research has found that tropical species, because they're already tolerating extreme heat, are most vulnerable to changing ecosystems as a result of climate change. But scientists from Dartmouth University in New Hampshire and the University of Virginia believe some reptiles might be able to evolve...

Auto market will adapt, if Americans adapt to alternative cars

2014-09-14 06:52:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Midland Daily News: We have been pondering the market for alternative fuel vehicles (non-carbon fossil fuels) given the concern over global warming and/or climate change. According to the 2014 U.S. Annual Energy Outlook there were just under 14 million alternative fuel vehicles on U.S. highways out of roughly 253 million vehicles in 2012 or 5.4 percent of all vehicles on the road. This is good progress over the last decade yet data indicates growth is slowing as it has been driven by government subsidies and/or tax...
