Runaway Greenhouse Stage More Easily Triggered on Planets Than Once Thought
2013-07-31 20:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World News: The process by which a planet overheats and enters the uninhabitable phase known as the "runaway greenhouse" stage might occur much more easily than previously thought, according to new research by astronomers at the University of Washington and the University of Victoria. In the runaway greenhouse stage, a planet absorbs more solar energy than it can give off to retain equilibrium and, as a result, the world overheats and its oceans boil, filling the atmosphere with steam. When this happens, the...

ESA funding a space penetrator, a science missile to bombard planets and moons
2013-07-15 20:15:31| Extremetech
We can land men on the Moon, land rovers on Mars, and send probes off to the farthest reaches of the Solar System. Unfortunately, everything is very expensive, and we generally can't land multiple robots on distant celestial bodies, much less a single one. However, with the UK's space penetrator, we could inexpensively bombard a planet with sensors and instruments.

New Green Vision: Technology As Our Planets Last Best Hope
2013-07-15 15:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: There is a new environmental agenda out there. One that is inimical to many traditional conservationists, but which is picking up kudos and converts. It calls itself environmental modernism -- which for many is an oxymoron. Wasnt the environmentalism of Rachel Carsons Silent Spring, Greenpeaces warriors against industrial whaling and the nuclear industry, and efforts to preserve the worlds last wild lands, meant to be the antithesis of the modern industrial world? But the prophets of ecological...

Global Reports Underline Rising Threat to Planets Bird Species
2013-06-20 19:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: New global research underlines the rising threats facing the worlds bird species, with three reports providing evidence that climate change, overfishing, and unsustainable agriculture are taking a heavy toll on avian populations worldwide. In a bulletin released earlier this week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) reported that numbers of some migratory bird populations along the Maine coast including Arctic terns and puffins have plummeted in recent years because their food supplies...
