Expedia sells stake in Chinese travel service

Expedia sold its entire stake in eLong, a Chinese travel service, to a group of businesses based in China for roughly $671 million. Before the market opened, Bellevue, Washington-based Expedia said that it had sold its 62.4 percent share in eLong to a group that includes Ctrip.com International Ltd., Keystone Lodgings Holdings Ltd., Plateno Group Ltd. and Luxuriant Holdings Ltd. The company said the transaction closed Friday.

A group of online travel Web sites claims Delta Air Lines Inc. and other airlines are cutting off price and schedule data from the sites, reducing travelers' ability to comparison shop for tickets. A May 19 report prepared for the Travel Technology Association says "some airlines are attempting to restrict access to their fare and schedule information, reduce the ability of consumers to easily compare prices, and drive travelers to their own websites, which do not offer price comparisons with other airlines."

U.S. Airlines Group Expects Busiest Summer Travel Season

Summer travel on U.S. airlines is expected to reach an all-time high this year on the wings of a strong U.S. economy, Washington-based trade group Airlines for America said on Monday. The group estimates that about 222 million passengers will fly on U.S. airlines from June through August, up 4.5 percent from the same time last year.

Need a new fall vacation destination? Southwest Airlines announced new nonstop service between Austin and two hot travel spots - Seattle, Washington and Boston, Massachusetts. Beginning November 1, travelers will be able to fly nonstop from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Seattle-Tacoma International and Boston Logan International.
