Ground Station Monitoring and Control System Engineer mfd

Position Description The Station Computer II STCII is the central monitoring and control system for ESA ground stations. It is currently deployed on five ground stations of the ESA tracking network. The system is responsible for monitoring and controlling all ground station equipment, to apply all configurations necessary to support tracking of spacecraft and to receive telemetry from and to send telecommands to various spacecraft. The system implements a high degree of automation to support unmanned operation of ground stations in various Countries around the world. The STCII installed in the European Space Operations Centre ESOC in Darmstadt allows remote monitoring and control of all the supported ESA ground stations. The STCII system uses a configuration database, which configures the online system to operate on different ground stations and to support different spacecraft missions. Preparation of the configuration databases is supported by the socalled Ground Station Tailoring System GSTS. Emphasis of the project is in particular on the maintenance and the continuous development of the configuration databases tailoring. The design and development of the successor monitor and control system for the STCII will start in the next months and it will be based on a generic development between industry and the Agency. Consultancy in the design and development phase is expected as well as support in the migration to, and testing of, the new system. We are looking for an engineer to join the project team composed of 5 members working onsite at ESOC. Your future duties and responsibilities As part of the team, you will be responsible for the maintenance and the tailoring of the ESA Ground Station Monitoring and control system. You will be working onsite at ESOC in direct contact with the missions and the ground stations engineers, you will be involved in the daily live operations and in special events like, for instance, the launches and the critical manoeuvres. Most of the activities will be performed remotely from ESOC in Darmstadt, but occasional travels to the Ground Stations might be required. Project tasks will be Implementation of ground station and satellite specific procedures Configuration of the monitoring control system for new ground station devices and test preparation Installation and configuration of the tailoring system Requirements clarifications with the customer Provision of consultancy related to monitoring control system evolution Configuration of new ground station devices System commissioning on ground stations Configuration, setup, and validation of workstations and servers for deployment on ESA ground stations Setup of system test environment in ESA Test Station TCPIP network configuration System administration for related IT systems Required qualifications to be successful in this role You should have a university degree in an engineering discipline or similar and 23 years relevant experience. You are motivated, you have a proactive and problemsolving attitude. You are willing to learn, to take on new responsibilities and able to work both autonomously and as part of an international team. You are a quick learner and you have strong analytical skills. Required Skills Experience in software testing and validation Ability to understand the operational design of Man Machine Interfaces MMI Validation of system configuration Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Ability to understand and handle complex systems Experience in software design and development Desirable Skills Experience in UnixLinux system administration Familiarity with database supported problem and issue tracking systems and configuration databases Familiarity with maintenance workflows Familiarity with customer support and feedback in a firstline maintenance environment Familiarity with distributed version control systems e.g. git Familiarity with scripting languages and OO programming languages Personal Characteristics Ability to communicate well with colleagues and clients Team player working effectively with colleagues, clients and secondline support teams. Ability to manage several tasks in parallel Ability to adapt and work within an international organisation Good communication skills in English written and spoken Domain knowledge in Space Ground Segments and Ground Stations would be an asset. Shortstays at our customers premises, based in Italy, may be required only during specific project phases. TASKS The Mission Control System Engineer shall work on multiple projects and assignments, leading all the internal technical activities with an high degree of autonomy during all the subsystem lifecycle, from the specification up to the operations phase. HeShe shall support proposal preparation and sales activities by leading, preparing and delivering all the required contributions inherent to the job position. The applicant shall be able to coordinate or directly execute the following tasks define the Mission Control SS specification and review upper level requirement allocation and traceability identify alternative solutions, perform andor support tradeoff analysis and COTS selection define and mantain the Mission Control SS architecture functional, software and physical, internal and external SS interfaces, and technical performance prepare the Mission Control SS development plans, test plans, test procedures implement, configure and maintain the Mission Control SS software define the Mission Control SS hardware specification execute the Mission Control SS software installation and configuration on hardware platforms participate in the Mission Control SS test campaigns execute test and validation activities of the Mission Control SS provide support to the Mission Control SS integration in the Ground Segment prepare the documentation of the Mission Control SS during all the project phases Participate to internal and external meetings, present and discuss analysis and results articipate and prepare the Mission Control SS milestones, and provide all the relevant contribution to upper level reviews. QUALIFICATION The applicant has got a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering or another relevant discipline. The applicant has at least 5 years professional experience, mostly on Mission Control. The following expertise is considered as mandatory extensive knowledge in satellite monitor and control professional experience on Mission Control engineering development operations no less than 3 years long professional experience on Mission Control software development, configuration, test procedures preparation, execution and reporting configuration and operation of mission control systems based on MICONYS Suite e.g. SCOS2000, MATIS for satellite operations Knowledge of Linux OS Knowledge of ECSS with greater focus on E branch, E70 and E40 disciplines The following expertise is considered as an advantage professional experience on Ground Segment System Engineering involvement in nanosatellite projects for ground stations andor open source mission control software knowledge experience on Flight Dynamics systems for Earth Observation missions team coordination and project management experience The applicant shall also possess very good analytical skills very good communications and presentation skills very good technical writing generating and delivering skills high level of written and spoken English sufficient level of written and spoken Italian is desirable The position can be opportunely tailored to the applicant level of experience job tasks and associated required degree of autonomy will be consequently adjusted.
