(Telecompaper) Elon Musk and Peter Thiel have launched OpenAI, a non-profit company that will research new artificial intelligence systems and share its findings, Bloomberg reported, adding that at least USD 1 billion has been invested in the organisation, according to Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors and Space Exploration. He will be OpenAI's co-chairman, along with Sam Altman, president of the Y Combinator.

Bouygues seeks EUR 2 bln compensation from Orange-Free deal

(Telecompaper) Bouygues Telecom CEO Olivier Roussat has written to French prime minister Manuel Valls seeking EUR 2.285 billion in compensation for damages related to Free Mobile's market entry in 2012 and the 2G/3G network roaming agreement with Orange until January 2018, reports Les Echos. In the letter reviewed by the newspaper, Bouygues denounces telecom regulator Arcep's "illegal" failure to not have established the conditions for the implementation and conclusion of the agreement from the outset.

Smart cities to use 1.6 bln connected things in 2016

(Telecompaper) The number connected things used by smart cities will grow to 1.6 billion in 2016, a 39 percent increase compared to this year's figure, according to a report by Gartner. In 2016, commercial security cameras and webcams as well as indoor LEDs will drive total growth, representing 24 percent of the IoT market for smart cities. Although commercial buildings will be the highest user of Internet of Things (IoT) until 2017, smart homes will take the lead with just over 1 billion connected things in 2018, said the report, adding that the growth will be fuelled by smart TVs, smart set-top boxes, smart bulbs and various home automation tools such as smart thermostats, home security systems and kitchen appliances.

Airtel to invest INR 600 bln in 3-year network expansion

(Telecompaper) Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel announced plans to invest around INR 600 billion in its network expansion over the next three years. Under its 'Project leap', Airtel will deploy over 70,000 base stations in the current fiscal, and 160,000 base stations in the next three years. It will also invest in improved backhaul and fixed broadband services in order to meet growing demand for internet access from consumers and businesses.
