Streaming takes over 71% of NAmerica peak internet traffic
2016-06-22 16:43:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Real-time entertainment, such as video and music streaming, accounted for over 71 percent of downstream traffic on North American fixed networks during peak evening hours in March, according to the latest data from Sandvine. The company expects North America will be the first region to surpass 80 percent of peak internet traffic from streaming entertainment, by the end of 2020. In Q1, Netflix remained the primary source of peak download traffic, at 35.2 percent. This is down slightly from 37.1 percent six months earlier, likely due to Netflix enhanced compression techniques. YouTube came second, both in download and upload traffic at respectively 17.53 percent and 13.13 percent. Amazon Video moved up to third place, from eighth a year ago, accounting for 4.26 percent of peak download traffic.
