What Can Farmers Do About Climate Change? Dynamic Cropping Systems
2017-02-21 19:54:46| National Farmers Union
By Laura Lengnick, found of Cultivating Resilience, LLC Some of Americas best farmers and ranchers are innovating more flexible crop rotations that allow them to fine-tune crop choices in response to increasing weather variability. This kind of crop rotation strategy, called dynamic cropping, is an ecologically-based management strategy that optimizes production through the use of flexible […]

What Can Farmers Do About Climate Change? Alley Cropping
2017-01-23 16:41:22| National Farmers Union
By Tom Driscoll, Director of Conservation Policy and NFU Foundation The Climate Column has covered many practices supported by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). In addition to its own work promoting conservation practices, NRCS also collaborates with the United States Forest Service to provide resources through the National Agroforestry Center (NAC) to help farmers contribute to climate resilience. NAC promotes […]

Which cropping system is best for the environment?
2016-10-04 12:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld
[NEWS] Early sown winter wheat, where the straw is removed every second year and used in biorefining, is the best of six different cereal cropping systems with regard to total environmental impact. What is the best cereal cropping system if you look at the big picture and take into account the impacts on global warming, eutrophication, land use in a global perspective, and arable land quality? In collaboration with Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen, Novozy…

Research shows cropping system changes means reduced river nitrates
2016-08-03 17:50:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Data shows that soybean residue helps to leach nitrates. Think Different Conventional wisdom has been that increased corn acres and more use of nitrogen fertilizer translates to increased nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in downstream waters. But a recent analysis of water sampling and crop management databases in the Raccoon River Watershed in central Iowa indicates otherwise. Nitrate concentrations and loading data from more than 60 main stem and tributary locations coupled with fertilizer data from the Iowa Soybean Associations On-Farm Network show that while corn acreage increased 19 percent and N fertilizer on corn increased by 24 percent from 1999 to 2014with a 24 percent drop in soybean acresnitrate levels in the water have not increased. While the study concentrated on estimating N balance and nitrate trends, the research team suggested better management of soybean residues may be one of the keys to improving both crop production methods and water quality. read more
