Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Corp. , among the world's three largest foundries, said they are assessing the impact from a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that rocked southern Taiwan during the wee hours of February 6. The chipmakers said they expect to recover most of their operations within two to three days.

(Telecompaper) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced that the earthquake did not cause any serious personnel injuries nor any structural or facility damage to the company's Fab 14 and Fab 6 manufacturing sites in the Tainan Science Park. The earthquake also did not cause equipment to shift position, the company said.

Feb 3 Taiwanese regulators on Wednesday approved a plan by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to build a chip plant in China that will make 12-inch wafers. The plan was announced by the company in December after Taiwan authorities relaxed rules that had mandated such investments in China be done under joint venture terms.
