Climate Change Speeds Extinctions

Scientist: If increases in greenhouse gases stay on pace, species will go extinct at an ever-increasing rate, according to a study published last week (May 1) in Science. In the worst-case scenario, global warming will contribute to wiping out one of every six species. Perhaps most surprising is that extinction risk does not just increase with temperature rise, but accelerates, curving upward as the Earth warms, Mark Urban, a University of Connecticut ecologist and the author of the study, told Smithsonian.com....

Plants survive better through mass extinctions than animals
2015-02-17 13:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld
[NEWS] At least 5 mass extinction events have profoundly changed the history of life on Earth. But a new study led by researchers at the University of Gothenburg shows that plants have been very resilient to those events. For over 400 million years, plants have played an essential role in almost all terrestrial environments and covered most of the world's surface. During this long history, many smaller and a few major periods of extinction severely affected Earth's ec…

Ice Age Extinctions Could Predict Modern Die-Offs
2014-10-30 13:33:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LiveScience: During the last Ice Age, huge mammals roamed North America. Those mammoths, saber-toothed cats and giant sloths disappeared about 12,000 years ago -- the same time as humans arrived and Earth's climate warmed from its glacial chill. Scientists have long debated the cause of the mass extinction, whether humans or climate change. But now, researchers are beginning to turn from investigating the cause to better understanding its impact. The loss of so many of those large species, or megafauna, could...

The closest most people get to understanding the singular vision and unique method of Michael Bay's filmmaking is to simply watch his finished products. Unfortunately, so much is lost in translation between the empty frame at the beginning of production and the overloaded insanity Bay packs into each and every scene by the movie's end.

Ancient farming seen curbing extinctions of animals, plants
2013-12-09 02:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Ancient farming practices, such as raising fish in rice paddies in China or Aboriginal Australian fire controls, will get a new lease of life under plans to slow extinctions of animals and plants, experts said on Monday. Turning to traditional farming is seen as a way of limiting what U.N. studies say is the worst spate of extinctions since the dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago, driven by a rising human population that is wrecking natural habitats. A 115-nation group seeking to protect...
