IBM opens up Power microprocessor design, partners with Google

2013-08-06 22:59:45| InfoWorld: Top News

IBM will license designs of the Power microprocessor architecture to other companies including Google, in an effort to expand use of the architecture and reverse declines in its systems hardware business. Intellectual property of the chip design is being opened up as part of a development alliance called OpenPower Consortium that IBM announced with Google on Tuesday. Consortium members will be able to make Power chips based on architecture designs, and component companies will be able to make hardware that can be integrated, or attached, to the processor.

IBM improves density of new Flex System servers

2013-08-06 13:35:56| InfoWorld: Top News

IBM has introduced x86 and Power processors with a new dual-chip server module that will help speed the deployment of cloud and virtualized environments. The Flex System servers, announced Tuesday, are based on a new board design in which two blade-type motherboards are combined into one server package, which can then be slotted into one socket. That effectively doubles the processors, memory, storage and other hardware resources available per socket.
