(Telecompaper) South African operator Cell C says it is discussing various proposals, including a non-binding offer from Telkom, with independent financial and legal advisers appointed by its lenders. Cell C confirmed that it had received an offer from Telkom but said it remains focused on ensuring operational efficiencies, restructuring its balance sheet, implementing a revised network strategy and improving overall liquidity. It said that negotiations with MTN for an expanded roaming agreement are at an advanced stage.

Telkom Group FY operating revenue up 5.3%, active mobile subscribers grow 86%

(Telecompaper) South African operator Telkom Group reported operating revenue up by 5.3 percent to ZAR 41.8 billion for the year ended 31 March. EBITDA increased by 8.5 percent to ZAR 11.3 billion, which can be attributed to ongoing sustainable cost management. The EBITDA margin expanded by 0.8 percentage points to 27.1 percent.

The two operators have signed an agreement to merge their businesses and operate as Airtel-Telkom, but the Committee on Implementation claims the deal has all the hallmarks of a scandal where private individuals are buying off a public entity through the backdoor for a song.

(Telecompaper) Airtel Kenya has announced that it has signed an agreement with Telkom Kenya to merge their respective mobile, enterprise and carrier services businesses as Airtel-Telkom. The nalisation and closure of the transaction is subject to approval by the relevant authorities. Under the agreement, the partners will combine their operations in Kenya and establish an entity with enhanced scale, operational efficiency and strategic brand presence, which will invest in networks to accelerate roll out of future technologies.
