The competition watchdog has been urged to ensure Qantas and China Eastern maintain their present number of flights on a key route between Australia and China if it gives them approval to deepen their alliance. While supportive of the planned deal, Austrade said there was a risk the airlines may seek to maximise yields on the Sydney-Shanghai route instead of passing on savings to travellers in the form of cheaper fares.

Hawaiian opts for A330neo over A350 Hawaiian Airlines has confirmed an order for six Airbus A330-800neo aircraft worth $US1.5 billion, swapping them for a previous A350 order. The order brings to just over 100 the number of firm orders for the A330neo, a reworked version of Airbus' most-sold wide-body jet which was launched earlier this year.

Qantas and China Eastern on Monday announced their intention to deepen their relationship from the existing codeshare deal - which Qantas also has with China Southern - into a broader alliance that allows them to coordinate scheduling and pricing. In the four years to April 2014, Qantas's share of passengers on flights between Australia and China, including Jetstar and Jetstar Asia, fell from 21 per cent to 15 per cent while China Southern's grew from 11 per cent to 22 per cent as it ramped up flights to its Guangzhou hub from several Australian cities.

Qantas on Monday became the first cab off the rank to capitalise on all that free trade goodwill flowing between China and Australia. The flying kangaroo is looking to expand its relationship with code-share partner China Eastern to what it calls a "joint agreement".

Qantas Airways will deepen its partnership with Shanghai-based airline China Eastern by seeking regulatory approvals to co-ordinate scheduling and pricing in the fast-growing Chinese market. That will make the alliance similar to the one Qantas has with Emirates on flights to Europe and with American Airlines on flights to the United States.
