(Telecompaper) According to a new report from Flurry Analytics, Apple accounted for 51 percent of the new device activations worldwide in the week leading up to and including Christmas Day (19-25 December). Samsung held the number two position with 18 percent of new device activations and Microsoft (Nokia) rounded out the top three with 5.8 percent share for mostly Lumia devices.

Android hits 1 bln activations, latest release named KitKat

(Telecompaper) Google announced that Android has passed the milestone of over 1 billion devices activated. The announcement came alongside the unveiling of the latest version of the mobile operating system, Android 4.4 KitKat. While the KitKat brand is owned by Nestle, Google said the use of the name for the latest release of Android was not part of a commercial agreement. "This is not a money-changing-hands kind of deal," John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, told the BBC. He said the idea was to do something "fun and unexpected". The agreement with Nestle will also see the launch of a Kitkat chocolate bar in the shape of the Android icon and a contest with Nestle to give away Google Nexus 7 tablets and credits for Google Play, starting 06 September. Further details of the new software will be announced at a later date.
