After a Die-Off, Small Trees Protect Watershed

2013-01-18 21:46:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New York Times: It doesn`t take an expert to understand that logging and violent storms cause massive damage to forests. What is less obvious, however, is the devastating effect that the removal of trees and vegetation can have on streams and lakes. Nitrate concentrations in waterways can soar by as much as 400 percent when the nitrogen cycle is disrupted by logging and the nitrate once tied up in organic matter washes into streams. Algal blooms and fish die-offs almost always follow this sort of nitrogen fertilization...

Tropical trees emit methane

2013-01-13 05:05:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Open University: In the rainforests of Borneo, the biggest emitters of methane gas are trees, according to new research led by The Open University. Previously it was thought that methane was only emitted from the soil surface of these tropical peat forests, but the researchers found significant quantities of methane being released from the stems of seven of the eight tree species studied. Their findings solve a mystery which has puzzled scientists ever since satellite images showed that there was more methane...

Mountain pine beetle threatening high-altitude, endangered trees

2013-01-02 22:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mongabay: In the western U.S., few trees generally grow in higher altitudes than the whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis). Providing shelter and food for bears, squirrels and birds, the whitebark pine ecosystems also help regulate water flow from snowmelt. But, according to a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), climate change has produced a novel threat for these high-altitude forests : mountain pine beetles (Dendroctonus ponderosae). Mountain pine beetles have already...
