China Mobile profits flat in Q1, revenues up 5.7%

(Telecompaper) China Mobile reported first-quarter revenues up 5.7 percent year-on-year to CNY 134.7 billion. EBITDA rose a slower 0.8 percent to CNY 61.2 billion, and net profit was up just 0.3 percent to CNY 27.9 billion. The operator added a net 16.01 million new customers in the quarter, for a total 726.31 million at the end of March. The 3G base grew by 26.44 million customers to 114.37 million. ARPU fell to CNY 63 per month from CNY 71 in the year-earlier period, amid a rise in customers with multiple Sim cards and a drop in average minutes per customer to 488 per month from 503. The expansion in 3G users helped mobile data traffic grow to a total 103.4 billion MB from 89.7 billion a year ago, and SMS also continued to increase, to 192.7 billion messages versus 182.6 billion a year earlier.

(Telecompaper) Vodafone announced that it has joined forces with China Mobile to bid for a mobile operator licence in Myanmar. The announcement comes on the day applications are due for the two new operator licences being offered by the Myanmar government. The operator Digicel also announced it has made a bid, with backing from George Soros's Quantum Strategic Partners and local investor Yoma Strategic Partners. A number of regional oeprators have also expressed interest, such as Singtel, AIS, PLDT, Telkom Indonesia, Airtel and KDDI. With a comparatively young and highly literate population of around 60 million, a GDP growth rate of 5.5 percent per annum and mobile phone penetration currently below 10 percent, Myanmar will be an important new market for the global mobile industry, Vodafone said. The two new licences will authorise the licence holders to build, own and operate a mobile network on a nationwide basis for an initial term of 15 years.
