Seeding Atlantic Ocean with Volcanic Iron Did Little to Lower CO2
2013-03-21 20:20:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Scientific American: Plankton, tiny marine organisms, are a good way of cleansing the atmosphere of one of the main greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide. To do this they need dissolved iron to help them to grow, and if they lack iron then they cannot do much to reduce CO2 levels. So the eruption in 2010 of an Icelandic volcano gave scientists a perfect opportunity to see how much the cataclysm helped the plankton by showering them with unexpected clouds of iron. Their verdict, published in the journal Geophysical Research...

Is cloud seeding halting flooding in Indonesia?
2013-02-19 12:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Indonesia is banking on an unusual strategy to prevent further flooding in its inundated capital Jakarta, and officials claim that they are already seeing positive results. They are using 'cloud seeding' -- a weather modification technology often resorted to during drought. The method involves injecting clouds with substances that encourage the formation of ice crystals heavy enough to fall, thereby speeding up the production of rain. Rain is the last thing that Indonesia needs now, as it has...

Four Steps to Implement Variable Rate Seeding in 2013
2013-02-13 20:34:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Source: Pioneer Variable rate seeding (VRS) can help maximize overall profits by selecting the best planting rates for each area of the field. VRS plans are most appropriate in fields with greatly varying soil composition or water holding capacity. read more

Build a Variable Rate Seeding Prescription
2013-01-18 18:41:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
South Dakota State University researchers are developing and field-testing for continuously variable-rate corn seeding prescriptions. The algorithm is based on five-year yield and rainfall data to map high and low average fields, and high and low yield variability for a field. It also takes into account seed costs, crop value, hybrid and other production factors such as expected rainfall. read more

Make Variable Seeding Work
2013-01-17 21:03:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Variable-rate planting can boost profits but requires good data. Keith Alverson and his family started to variable-rate plant in the 1990s, and now find benefit with the practice on every corn acre. He, his father Ron and uncle grow corn and soybeans on rolling land near Chester, S.D. In the early 1990s, they started reducing seeding rates manually in the dry corners of pivot-irrigated fields, where yield potential is always much lower. The practice cut seed costs by 25% in unwatered sections, and was especially beneficial in dry years, Alverson says. read more
