TIM, Google team up to launch 4K-ready Android TV decoder

(Telecompaper) TIM (Telecom Italia) has teamed up with Google to launch a new 4K-ready decoder based on the Android TV platform. First mentioned in March, the new set-top box has a distinctive truncated cone shape and is closely integrated with the operator's video-on-demand service TIMvision and gives customers direct access to videos, news and online games on Google Play. The device comes with 5GHz 802.11ac dual band Wi-Fi connectivity and a high-performance processor for fluid video streaming, the DVB-T2 standard for accessing DTT channels and a remote control complete with voice search functionality. The decoder will be available in June at the promotional price for new TIM Smart customers of EUR 2 per month, and will subsequently be made available to customers who have already signed up to TIMvision.
