Intel to exit smartphone modem business

(Telecompaper) Intel announced plans to exit the smartphone modem business as it has been unable to turn a profit. The company said it will complete orders for its existing 4G products but will not release a 5G modem as earlier intended. The chipmaker is reviewing its business for modems in PCs and IoT devices and said it will continue to support the mobile network infrastructure business.

Intel launches 5G network card, sees 5G modem platform complete by year-end

(Telecompaper) Intel launched at Mobile World Congress its FPGA Programmable Acceleration Card for 5G networks. The N3000 accelerates many virtualized workloads, ranging from 5G radio access networks to core network applications, the chipmaker said. Intel also announced that Ericsson is adopting its new SoC for mobile base stations and it's working with Skyworks and gateway manufacturers on integration of its 5G modem, with the first products available for testing by year-end.

Qualcomm unveils second-generation 5G modem

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has unveiled its second-generation 5G modem, a week before MWC. The Snapdragon X55 5G modem supports 5G NR mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrum bands and can deliver speeds of up to 7 Gbps over 5G and 2.5 Gbps on Cat 22 LTE. It is expected to appear in the first commercial devices in late 2019.

Qualcomm introduces new IoT LTE modem

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled its new Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem, purpose-built for IoT applications such as asset trackers, health monitors, security systems, smart city sensors and smart meters, as well as a range of wearable trackers. Quectel is the first global provider scheduled to provide mobile modules based on the new modem. Gemalto and Telit will also launch products based on the new modem in 2019.
