The 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX is a surprisingly sexy tablet. For $230, the same price as the Nexus 7, the Fire HDX comes with the same beautiful screen (1920x1080), but a much faster SoC (Snapdragon 800 vs. Snapdragon 600) and significantly more battery life (about 11 hours vs. 9) -- and the HDX is smaller than the Nexus 7. If your primary purpose for owning a 7-inch tablet is media consumption, the Fire HDX really is superb. The new Mayday function, which lets you call Amazon's excellent customer service department with a couple of presses, is truly revolutionary as well.

(Telecompaper) Amazon has introduced the new Kindle Fire HDX and the new Kindle Fire HD, both featuring the new Fire OS and currently available for pre-order from Amazon. The new Kindle Fire HDX family features an HDX display, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor running at 2.2 GHz, the new Fire OS 3.0 "Mojito" with updated features and platform updates, the new one touch Mayday button, up to eleven hours of mixed use and seventeen hours of reading and updated email, calendar and Silk browser. In addition, the Kindle Fire HDX comes equipped with new enterprise features including hardware and software-encryption, Kerberos Intranet, secure Wi-Fi connections, VPN integration and wireless printing, dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus audio and virtual 5.1 multi-channel surround sound and a front-facing HD camera. The 8.9-inch Fire HDX also comes equipped with a new 8-megapixel wide-aperture rear-facing camera with 1080p HD video. The 7-inch Kindle Fire is currently available for pre-order for USD 229 and will begin shipping on 18 October. The 4G version will is also available for pre-order, is priced at USD 329 and will begin shipping 14 November. Amazon has announced another new Kindle -- the Kindle Fire HDX -- an upgraded version of the regular Kindle Fire HD, but with an improved screen, camera, quad-core processor, and a new Amazon-exclusive feature, the Mayday button. With the upgraded hardware, it appears as though Amazon is taking aim at the big names in the tablet market.
