Associated Press: Out of the grip of the federal prison system, environmental and climate activist Tim DeChristopher plans to make Harvard Divinity School his next stop. DeChristopher, 31, has achieved folk status and inspired a documentary airing Monday - all for grabbing a bidder's paddle and running up prices at a federal oil-and-gas lease auction, trying to safeguard wild lands near Utah's national parks from drilling. The University of Utah economics graduate had no money for his $1.8 million in winning...

2013-04-19 23:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: China is warming to gasoline-electric hybrid cars as it tackles an addiction to fossil fuels, and local car makers are finally heeding the call and entering a niche 'green' market dominated by Japanese rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp. Some automakers like state-owned SAIC Motor Corp and Brilliance Auto are developing the fuel-saving technology pioneered by Toyota on its Prius model two decades ago, and BYD Co, a Chinese battery and automaker part-owned by a Warren Buffett company, will unveil...
EU trade chief seeks backing for case against Huawei, ZTE
2013-04-17 09:14:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The European Union's trade chief will seek the backing of EU states to investigate Chinese telecoms equipment makers Huawei and ZTE, Reuters reports. The European Commission has been collecting evidence to prepare a possible case against Huawei and ZTE over state subsidies it says allows the companies to undercut European firms. EU trade investigations normally begin with a company complaint, but European manufacturers Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks have refused to cooperate with the Commission because of fears that they could be shut out of the growing Chinese market in retaliation, people familiar with the matter said. As a result EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht will sound out EU trade ministers on the issue at a meeting in Dublin this week, diplomats told Reuters. An internal EU report last year recommended that the EU should take action against Chinese telecoms equipment makers as their increasing dominance of mobile networks made them a threat to security as well as to home-grown companies.

Globe and Mail: The kid with the YouTube rant is young and approachable. He's an actor sporting a black leather jacket, strolling through a West Coast forest and talking about pipelines. "The environment. The economy," he intones. "People think you have to have one or the other. But do you? So many things to think about." And then, he tells us how we might want to think about those things. How we don't have to worry about pipeline spills, since pipelines are monitored 24/7 "by trained experts." Tankers,...

Grist: What do you do when local opposition to an offshore wind farm project dries up, when the NIMBY crowd runs out of steam, when the federal government gives the green light and extends every permit and courtesy the law will allow, when the technology is tested and proven, and theres nothing left to do but build it? Well, then you go looking for money lots of it. After more than a decade of preparation, the Massachusetts wind energy company Cape Wind has done just that and the results are looking...
