Coke is funding a health research organization that shifts blame away from sugary soda drinks as a cause of obesity. Coca-Cola donated $1.5 million last year to start a nonprofit research organization that questions the role soda and fast food play in weight gain, according to the New York Times.

Our sugar consumption is significantly declining, a controversial new paper shows. "Sugar consumption in Australia appears to have been relatively stable in the three decades following the end of World War II but since the late 1970s, there has been a substantial decline," author Bill Shrapnel said. "To put the decline in consumption into context, by 2011, Australians were each consuming 8.3 kilograms or 39.5 cups of sugar less per year compared to 1970."

Until now, health experts have thought that sugary drinks and type 2 diabetes are linked because sugar promotes weight gain, and body fat contributes to insulin resistance, which precedes diabetes.
