06.24: The New Wild: Why Invasive Species Will Be Nature's Salvation
2015-05-18 22:04:43| Powells Books Events Calendar
For a long time, veteran environmental journalist Fred Pearce thought in stark terms about invasive species: they were the evil interlopers spoiling pristine "natural" ecosystems. Most conservationists and environmentalists share this view. However, a growing group of scientists is taking a fresh look at how species interact in the wild. In The New Wild (Beacon), Pearce goes on a journey across six continents to rediscover what conservation in the 21st century should be about. In an era of climate change and widespread ecological damage, it is absolutely crucial that we find ways to help nature regenerate. Embracing the new ecology, Pearce shows us, is our best chance.

Invasive species worsen damage from Hawaii's storms
2014-08-22 20:14:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: Damage from Hurricane Iselle, which recently battered Hawaii's Big Island, was exacerbated by invasion of non-native tree species, say experts who have studied the transformation of Hawaii's native forests. Iselle, which made landfall on the Big Island on August 7, was the third-strongest tropical cyclone to hit Hawaii since 1950. It caused upwards of $50 million in damage, mostly from lost fruit harvest and impacts on infrastructure and housing. Much of the damage was caused by downed trees,...

Hybridization Between Native And Invasive Species Of Trout Accelerated By Climate Change
2014-05-27 22:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
RedOrbit: Scientists have discovered that the rapid spread of hybridization between a native species and an invasive species of trout in the wild is strongly linked to changes in climate. In the study, stream temperature warming over the past several decades and decreases in spring flow over the same time period contributed to the spread of hybridization between native westslope cutthroat trout and introduced rainbow trout the worlds most widely introduced invasive fish species across the Flathead River...

Europe tries to block new invasive species, but those driven by climate change get a pass
2014-05-07 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ClimateWire: Cracking down on invasive species for the first time, the European Parliament has approved legislation to stop alien species of plants, animals and insects from entering the European Union and to limit their damage. "This is the only legislation in Europe tackling invasive species," said Baptiste Chatain, environment spokesman for the European Parliament. And while the new measure recognizes that global trade, transport, tourism and climate change may all contribute to the spread, it gives species...
