Heatwave deaths in New York city could rise by up to 22%, study shows
2013-05-19 19:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: New York city could experience up to 22% more deaths from extreme summertime heat in the coming decade under global warming, according to a study of the impact of climate trends. The higher deaths will be partially offset by a reduction in deaths due to the milder winters predicted in Manhattan. Overall, however, the net effect of the new temperature norms under climate change would be to increase weather-related deaths in New York city by up to 6.2% a year by the 2020s, according to the scientists....
Coal-fired power drops despite heatwave
2013-04-06 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Sydney Morning Herald: The share of coal in eastern Australia's electricity generation network has continued to recede, along with carbon emissions, despite a March heatwave that lifted power demand for the first time in 16 months. The widespread and prolonged heat over the country's south-east early last month prompted the biggest peak in demand for the entire summer. It was enough to trigger a 0.01 per cent annualised gain in electricity demand on the National Electricity Market for March, the first increase since...

Australia: Giant Heatwave Delivers Hottest January on Record

Sydney Morning Herald: Australia notches another hot month, breaking a record for January that had stood since 1932. Australia's year of extreme weather has collected a fresh record with January posting the hottest average temperatures for the month on record. With just a day's data to be collected, the average of maximum and minimum temperatures for the month was 29.7 degrees. That tally was 1.79 degrees above the long-term average. Almost certainly there'll be a hotter, longer, more extreme spell (in February)...

What is causing Australia's heatwave?
2013-01-21 12:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Australia has started 2013 with a record-breaking heat wave that has lasted more than two weeks across many parts of the country. Temperatures have regularly gone above 48°C, with the highest recorded maximum of 49.6°C at Moomba in South Australia. The extreme conditions have been associated with a delayed onset of the Australian monsoon, and slow moving weather systems over the continent. Australia has always experienced heat waves, and they are a normal part of most summers. However, the current...

Australia: Heatwave exacerbated by climate change says Climate Commission
2013-01-12 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Australian Broadcasting Corporation: A new report from the Federal Government's Climate Commission says the heatwave and bushfires that have affected Australia this week have been exacerbated by global warming. The report - Off the Charts: Extreme Australian Summer Heat - warns of more extreme bushfires and hotter, longer, bigger and more frequent heatwaves, due to climate change. It says the number of record heat days across Australia has doubled since 1960 and more temperature records are likely to be broken as hot conditions...
