In 2 papers published in The Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Biomedical Optics Express, researchers from Netherlands and Israel describe 2 wearable devices that use changing patterns of scattered light to monitor biometrics. While one device tracks glucose concentration and dehydration levels, other monitors pulse. Glucose concentration is measured directly but noninvasively, and pulse monitoring is less sensitive to errors when while wearer is in motion. Featuring touchscreen display and built-in software capabilities, Pump 11 Elite Glucose Clamp Infusion System is intended for academic euglycemic or hyperglycemic glucose clamp studies. Glucose clamp program lets user enter desired concentration, animal weight, and dose rate in syringe pump and then uses that information to properly set infusion rate automatically. For complex procedures, users can change dose rate during infusion. Previous dose rate setting is displayed while pump is running.
