Canada: Oil Sands Leak: 'Bitumen Emulsion' Released on Alberta Weapons Range
2013-06-28 11:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
CBC: Oilsands mixed with water has leaked in northeastern Alberta. The Alberta Energy Regulator says Canadian Natural Resources Limited reported Monday that bitumen emulsion has been released on the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range. The regulator put out a news release about it on Thursday. Regulator spokesman Bob Curran says it's not clear how much has leaked or what caused the release from CNRL's high-pressure cyclic steam project. Curran says the oilsands mixture has affected a nearby slough....

Diluted oil sands crude no more likely to leak from pipeline than other oil, study finds
2013-06-26 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: The diluted form of heavy crude from Canadian oil sands fields is no more likely to leak from a pipeline than other forms of oil, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences reported Tuesday. The finding, after an extensive study by the National Research Council, refutes a claim by opponents of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline extension, who contend that the "diluted bitumen' it would carry is more corrosive than other forms of crude and thus more likely to leak. The TransCanada pipeline...

How the oil sands industry is distorting Canadas economy
2013-06-01 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Globe and Mail: By 2030, Canada's output from the oil sands will reach about five million barrels a day, more than twice today's output. Yet, by 2030, chances are also good that the world will have placed a price on carbon emissions to spur energy innovation and wean humanity off carbon-based fuels. By then, climate change's impact on global food security will have become starkly obvious. Already, heat waves and droughts in major grain-producing regions have caused food-price shocks and political unrest around the...

British Columbia Opposes Planned Oil Sands Pipeline
2013-06-01 02:49:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New York Times: A pipeline for exporting oil sands bitumen to Asia-bound tankers was dealt a severe blow on Friday when the province of British Columbia urged a federal review panel to reject the $6 billion plan. The proposal to build the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and its port is effectively Alberta's backup plan in case the Obama administration turns down the Keystone XL, a pipeline that would link the oil sands with American refineries on the Gulf Coast. Several of the concerns raised by British Columbia...
