New study casts doubt on climate link to El Nio

ClimateWire: A new study is challenging conventional predictions of El Nio weather patterns. The study, published Dec. 14 in Nature Geoscience, finds that the El Nio pattern -- a warming in the equatorial Pacific Ocean associated with wet weather on the West Coast -- may be less influenced by large-scale climate trends than currently assumed. The study challenges nine climate models in use today, which find an association between strong seasonal shifts -- exceptionally hot summers and cold winters --...
Study finds a link between neonic pesticides and honeybee deaths

Grist: A new study, published on Thursday, shows a correlation between honeybee colony deaths and neonicotinoid pesticide usage in the United Kingdom. Neonicotinoids generally come as a seed coating. When the seed sprouts, it takes in the pesticide, which then protects it against predators. But if that plant flowers, small amounts of the pesticide will linger in the pollen and nectar, which may hurt the beneficial insects, like bees, visiting those blooms to feed. There`s some controversy about this:...
Decade-long study wins Heinz Award after findings include link between air pollution, obesity

That was just one of the more surprising findings of a decade-long public health study by Frederica Perera, an environmental health researcher at Columbia University and one of five winners of this year's Heinz Awards. Dr. Perera's research tracked the pre- and post-natal health of 720 mother-child pairs in New York City.
