Server market revenue down 7.7 percent in Q1

Server revenue worldwide was down 7.7 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, as weak economic conditions and server consolidation by customers slowed sales, according to research firm IDC. Revenue in the market dropped to $10.9 billion in the quarter, the fifth-time in the last six quarters the server industry saw year-over-year decline. Server shipments also fell in the period by 3.9 percent year-over-year.

Advanced Micro Devices had no plans to release low-power x86 server chips until the release of its ARM-based servers in 2014, but sagging server fortunes have changed the company's direction. The company is introducing two low-power quad-core Opteron server chips called X2150 and X1150, which draw up to 11 watts of power and are targeted at microservers. The chips are based on the Jaguar core, which is already in PC processors and chips to be used in the Xbox and PlayStation 4 game consoles.
Dell and Cisco grow in Q1 despite tough server market

As overall server market revenue and shipments declined in the first quarter, both Dell and Cisco Systems managed growth while enterprise stalwarts Hewlett-Packard and IBM struggled in the headwinds. Worldwide server shipments declined 0.7 percent year-on-year to 2.3 million units, while revenue declined 5.0 percent to $11.8 billion, according to market research company Gartner.
